Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
