A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
